Power Nap #10
Funny and thought-provoking media from Kate and her team for a quick, refreshing pick-me-up.
Things We Found Interesting About Animals…
1. Golden Moles are awesome. They are blind and live almost entirely underground. Yet, they are the only mammal with iridescent fur: “under different lights and from different angles, their fur shifts through turquoise, navy, purple, gold.” Scientists have no idea why. They are "more closely related to the elephant . . . small enough to fit in a child’s hand . . . their kidneys are so efficient that many species can go their entire lives without drinking a drop of water. . . [they] can hear the footsteps up above of birds and lizards . . .[and] distinguish between the footfall of ants and termites.”
2. Sea slugs cut off their own heads and grow them back in 20 days. This phenomenon “has been observed in simpler life forms such as hydra and flatworms—but it's practically unheard of in complex animals like sea slugs.” They may do this to get rid of parasites, or maybe to escape predators. “How the slugs survive without a heart and other vital organs for nearly 1 month remains a mystery.”
3. A 90-year-old tortoise named Mr. Pickles just became a father of 3. It's a big 'dill."
Philosophy Razors
In philosophy, a “razor” is a general rule of thinking to help "shave away" unnecessary assumptions or "cut" apart two similar conclusions. Here are some of Nate's favorites:
Occam's Razor: When choosing between two competing explanations, pick the simpler one.
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
Betteridge’s Law of Headlines: “any headline which ends in a question mark can be answered by the word ‘no’”.
Healy's Law of Holes (remember this next time you are in a fight with your spouse): If you find yourself in a hole, stop digging.
Things From The Gram
1. Kate wrote about Brief Seasons and the beauty we can find within them.
2. Kate shared an after school hero: Muffin tin snack tray.
3. Kate shared her favorite method for prepping overnight steel-cut oats.
3. Nate loved this video about writing the movie Arrival (which he also loved). He didn't know it was based on a short story (immediately orders it from Amazon).
4. Kate and Nate celebrated their 10 year anniversary last week and Kate wrote about the secret sauce to marriage.
Things We Devoured
Jess made a Greek Meatballs and Orzo Skillet recipe when she had friends in town and it received rave reviews by everyone at the table (including her 18 month old). She paired it with a Greek Goddess dip (like a tzatziki sauce) and it took the flavor to the next level. She also baked the meatballs instead of pan frying for less of a mess (at 350 for 30 minutes).
The Night Agent. The acting won't win any awards, but this is the first show Nate has truly binged in quite some time, watching all ten episodes in a week (and forgoing precious sleep). He's never seen a Washington D.C., FBI, there's a mole in the White House spy thriller he didn't like.
In Case You Missed It
Kate is on Spring Break with her family and recently talked about her 3 favorite hats for sun protection. This one easily rolls up in your beach bag and allows you to have your hair up. This one is is sturdy, cute and stays on well in the wind. This one really covers the face well and is great for outdoor exercise as well.
Kate just got a new planner with a weekly “to do” list layout she's loving.
Kate discovered this sleep sack for Alberta after re-using the same ones since John Robert for years. The two way zipper is the ultimate life hack for easy diaper changes and she's wondering why it's taken her years to discover.
