Power Nap #11
Funny and thought-provoking media from Kate and her team for a quick, refreshing pick-me-up.
Things We Found Interesting
1. We are living in The Age of Average. Everything from architecture to movies to cars to coffee shops are all becoming, well, the same, all over the world. Why?
2. The Vesuvius Challenge. This is cool. About 300 years ago, ancient scrolls from the library of Julius Ceasar’s father-in-law’s villa were found carbonized by volcanic heat but preserved. If read, they would more than double the corpus of literature we have from antiquity. With X-ray tomography, computer vision, machine learning, and AI, we are close to reading the scrolls without opening them, a process called “virtual unwrapping.” h/t to Not Boring
3. A higher paying job or a job you love? Seems like the older we get, the more we realize what's important. I also thought it was interesting that “not sure" stays pretty steady no matter the age. Here's the chart:
“At critical moments in time, you can raise the aspirations of other people significantly, especially when they are relatively young, simply by suggesting they do something better or more ambitious than what they might have in mind. It costs you relatively little to do this, but the benefit to them, and to the broader world, may be enormous. This is in fact one of the most valuable things you can do with your time and with your life.” - Tyler Cowan
"We are used to thinking in terms of what we can teach our children. Maybe we need to ask ourselves what we may learn from them." - Piero Ferrucci
Things From The Gram
1. Kate shared an easy exercise routine you can do while playing with your toddler: swingercise.
2. Kate shared 3 helpful tips to help you remember to change your air filters.
3. Kate discussed when to use glass versus plastic tupperware containers.
4. Nate will remember to check the kids' pockets before loading the laundry.
Things We Devoured
Jess made quiche for dinner not once, but twice this week because it was that big of a hit. Don't sleep on quiche, especially Kate's recipe that you really can't mess up. She opted for carmelized onion, bell pepper, zucchini, along with chicken sausage, cheddar cheese, and spinach. 10/10.
Nate read Seven Brief Lessons on Physics. At 81 pages, it was brief… and good. Explaining things like relativity and quantum physics in a few pages isn't easy. Nate's favorite line was also – fittingly – brief: “Genius hesitates.” Recommend if you like science.
In Case You Missed It
Kate talked all things pool bag this week - she did a deep dive here on why this is the bag you need. The famous mesh bags are obviously the star of the show. But so are these goggles and comfortable goggles straps for the kids. All of her beach/pool recommendations can be found here.
Kate loved this bathing suit so much she bought it in another color.
It's the season of performance fabric. Kate loves this shirt for working out and this v-neck shirt for everyday wear.
