Power Nap #26
Funny and thought-provoking media from Kate and her team for a quick, refreshing pick-me-up.
In Case You Missed It
1. She wrote about a desk made with love.
2. Kate shared some inspiration to take time after a trip to realize what you don't need and declutter accordingly.
3. She also shared her Broadway audition tape. (Nate has advised her to keep her day job)
4. Kate mentioned two downloads on her freebies page: one is a printable of her Back to School Prayer for Anxious Parents and the other contains two versions of the Daily Responsibilities Chart she uses for her kids.
5. Kate shared a small extension cord everyone should keep in their travel bag, the perfect plug option for when you only have one outlet directly behind the bed. We also now have someone helping us get things onto LiketoKnow.it! If you aren't familiar, LTK offers a way for us to link things on images and provide a description on the page for the item. It's helpful if there's something you have heard Kate mention and want to find it again. These links are commissionable for NTK at no cost to you so it's a win all around. (Also…LTK, NTK…a bit confusing, sorry!) For example, we now have one image that explains all three levels of kids' knives we like. Woo hoo!

Things we found interesting
How's your day going? Because this lady had a hawk drop a snake on her while she was mowing her lawn. Then the hawked attacked her to get back the snake. h/t to Marginal Revolution.
"Americans are embracing grocery store sushi." We concur, seeing as how we often get sushi from the Whole Foods by our house (it's really good!) h/t to Abnormal Returns
All of these are insects:
The Kid's Zone is a special Summer installment for The Power Nap. We hope this helps parents survive the dog days of summer with a full house! These were all submitted to Kate on Instagram by her followers. If you have suggestions, email them to us.
BOOKS THAT WERE OK.
We don't want to willy-nilly just recommend books that we didn't think were worth reading. But occasionally you go through multiple books in a row that were “just ok.” So, from time to time, we plan to have this segment that runs through some books that don't rise to the level of “recommend” (although that doesn't mean that some people may find them interesting and absolutely love them):
Kate read “Lessons in Chemistry” by Bonnie Garmus, where in the early 1960s, chemist Elizabeth Zott, the only female chemist on an all-male team at Hastings Research Institute, and Calvin Evans, the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder fall in love. But like science, life is unpredictable. Which is why a few years later Elizabeth Zott finds herself not only a single mother, but the reluctant star of America’s most beloved cooking show. But as it turns out, Elizabeth Zott isn’t just teaching women to cook. She’s daring them to change the status quo. (trigger warning: the is a graphic rape scene in the early chapters)
Nate read “The Magicians” by Lev Grossman. The front cover had a quote from George R.R. Martin (writer of Game of Thrones) that said: “The Magicians is to Harry Potter as a shot of Irish whiskey is to a glass of weak tea. . . . Hogwarts was never like this.” That caught his eye, but Nate came away underwhelmed. There are two sequel books, but he isn't going to read them.
Nate read “The Cartographers” by Peng Shepherd. Last year, he read another of Shepard's books “the Book of M," which he really liked. The Cartographers is about Nell Young. Her father, Dr. Daniel Young, is a legend in the cartography field and Nell’s personal hero. But she hasn’t seen or spoken to him ever since he cruelly fired her and destroyed her reputation after an argument over an old, cheap gas station highway map. But when her dad is found dead in his office at the New York Public Library, with the very same seemingly worthless map hidden in his desk, Nell can’t resist investigating. To her surprise, she soon discovers that the map is incredibly valuable and exceedingly rare. In fact, she may now have the only copy left in existence...because a mysterious collector has been hunting down and destroying every last one—along with anyone who gets in the way.
