Things We Found Interesting
Nate reads a handful of email newsletters each week that curate articles and essays to read. It's somewhat rare that the same piece shows up in multiple of these newsletters, but over the last week or two there have been a few articles that he keeps seeing linked over and over again. Here they are:
“The Truth About College Costs": What if college costs aren't rising as fast as everyone says. What if colleges are just pricing things in weird ways where the “sticker price” goes up but the discounts are applied liberally (kind of like the retailer that seems to always have a 25% off deal going).
“They Studied Dishonesty. Was Their Work a Lie?”: New Yorker article on research into “why we bend the truth." It turns out that some of the researchers may have been “bending the data.” Oh the irony. (I don't think this will be pay-walled; apologies if it is for you.)
“The Insider: how Michael Lewis got a Backstage Pass for the Fall of Sam Bankman-Fried": Nate's a big Michael Lewis fan (author of, among others, Moneyball, the Blindside, and The Big Short, which you might have read or seen the movies). Lewis's new book out last week was on Sam Bankman-Fried, the founder of failed crypto-currency exchange FTX, who many thought may be the world's first trillionaire, but it looks like was actually running a massive fraud.
Unrelated: Apparently there is a bed bug outbreak in Paris. And seems like there is fear it is spreading to London via the Tube.
