Things We Found Interesting

1. After initial reports that California's recently passed bill banned the sale of Skittles starting in 2027, Skittles fans everywhere breath a sign of relief after coloring agent and Skittles ingredient titanium dioxide was left off the final list of banned substances. Crisis averted (for now).

2. Girl Math. “Recently, for instance, Guldner set out to buy a pair of Dr. Martens boots that cost $130. In her search, she found a similar pair that cost only $50. By her computation, buying the cheaper shoes meant she had actually made money. ‘There was $80 more that I could have for sports bras and sweaters,’ she says.” h/t to Marginal Revolution

3. Charles Feeney passed away recently. You've probably never heard of him (we hadn't). But you should. Feeney got rich owning duty free stores (like at airports). And then spent most of his life giving away his $8 billion fortune, going to great lengths to keep most of his gifts secret. On why he didn't spend his vast fortune on more things: “You can only wear one pair of pants at a time,” he was fond of saying.

Things We Devoured

Earlier this year, Nate read (and reviewed in the Power Nap) the Wager, a book about a shipwreck and subsequent survival off the coast of South America. Power Nap reader Anna Moffett suggested he check out “Endurance," which tells the story of Ernest Shackleton's incredible journey over Antarctica. Nate liked Endurance more than the Wager, mostly because he liked Shackleton more than Cheap (the captain in the Wager). But he's probably done with survival books for a while.

Kate is joining @thecarmom for “Crocktober,” where they make one crock pot recipe every week of October. Last week they made the third recipe, Dr. Pepper Pulled Pork from Dance Around The Kitchen. Kate served it on Hawaiian rolls and was even able to use the leftovers on nachos for mountain weekend. It was a HIT!
