Power Nap #42
Funny and thought-provoking media from Kate and her team for a quick, refreshing pick-me-up.
In Case You Missed It
1. Kate bought this 10 pack of headbands for the girls for Christmas and she's loving them for herself. They don't give you a headache!
2. Nate is loving this bird identifying app.
3. Kate made the easy sheet pancakes and topped them with half chocolate chips, half frozen blueberry and sprinkles. SO fluffy! The kids love it and it's a great way to sneak in a ton of protein.
4. Wanting something fun to end the day but trying to cut back on alcohol? Try this.
"If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music, or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well."
– Martin Luther King Jr.
Things We Found Interesting
This article on “how to light the winter months" gives some helpful tips on adapting during the short days and long nights of winter. Tips include: getting outside, noticing dusk and dawn, and being ok with your behavior changing for a season. Plus it uses the word “apricity," which means “the warm of the winter sun.” Great word.
Nate recently read the book “Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World.” Like most of these types of books, he thought it was too long. But the premise is interesting: while most “experts” push us and our kids towards specialization ("pick a sport, instrument, college major, etc. as early as you can"), a closer look at the research indicates that in most cases it's generalists, not specialists, that are primed to excel. Range paired nicely with this article shared by Power Nap reader Emily Griesbeck on “identity parenting,” or “the pressure to find your child's Thing.” Nate also wrote about this for Kate's newsletter last year: “Nate's Parenting Advice.”
