Things We Found Interesting About Birds
If you don't have it yet, you need the Merlin Bird Identification app. Nate loves it. The kids love it. You can id a bird by either answering a series of questions (e.g., is it bigger than a robin?), submitting a photo (the zoom feature is pretty good, so you don't actually need a super close photo), or – probably the coolest of all – by recording a sound bite and letting the app tell you what bird is making the call. Really great low stakes way to get yourself and your kids learning about the birds in your neighborhood.
This tool allows you to put in your county and explore what birds are migrating over house at night. Looks like Charleston County had around 300k birds cross over last night. Top species: Yellow-rumped Warbler, Eastern Kingbird, and the Yellow-billed Cuckoo.
Powernapper Blair Covington shared this article on Cowbirds after discovering “some (what we think are) baby cowbirds while doing yard work.” In case you don't know, Cowbirds are brood parasites, meaning that rather than raise their young themselves, they ditch their eggs in other species’ nests and allow these forced foster parents to do the tough work of chick-rearing.
