Power Nap #7
Funny and thought-provoking media from Kate and her team for a quick, refreshing pick-me-up.
Things We Found Interesting
1. Mast Year: A year where there is an unusually high amount of acorns or other nuts. Why do trees do this? To produce so many nuts that nut-eating animals can't possibly eat them all, ensuring some will grow into trees. Trees are smart.
2. Tradle: Like Wordle, except you get six guesses as to which country has the exports shown on the tree map. It's really a geography game, because after each guess they give you the direction and distance (in KMs) to the right country.
3. A collection of short antidotes from Morgan Housel. Here was our favorite:
Building the transcontinental railroad in the 1860s was too costly for any private company to manage. So Congress offered subsidies: $16,000 per mile on flat land and up to $96,000 per mile in the mountains. As to what was considered “flat” vs. “mountain” land, Congress relied on the opinion of geologists. One particularly malleable geologist named Josiah Whitney was persuaded to declare that the Sacramento Valley – flat as a pancake – was actually the geological beginning of the Sierra Nevada mountains, and was therefore a mountainous region. The railroad companies were so grateful for the sleight of hand they persuaded the California legislature to rename the state’s tallest mountain Mount Whitney. Everything is for sale.
4. Inflation Update: The price of food continues to rise, while gas prices seem to be stabilizing:
5. Further Inflation Update: No one is immune. Not even the Tooth Fairy. (and we thought we were being generous by giving Scout a fiver – that's below market!!)
Things From The Gram
Berta made her first reel on the #NTKtakethemamealmarch theme and she's clearly a natural
If Kate brought you a meal in 2022, there was a 99% chance this was it. She made one thing, and everything else came from the store!
Nate enjoyed this Youtube video about sounding editing and why you can't understand/hear the dialogue in lots of movies/shows. (10 min watch)
Things We Devoured
Berta (Kate' mom) has a recipe she keeps on repeat: Egg Roll In a Bowl is a healthy, quick meal done in under 20 minutes. It's super customizable so you could easily make it vegetarian, paleo, etc. She tripled the recipe for our family vacation last year and everyone loved it. If Berta says it's good, we know it's true.
Nate read “If” by Rudyard Kipling, first published in 1910 as paternal advice to his son. His favorite line:
"If you can make one heap of all your winnings; And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss; And lose, and start again at your beginnings;
And never breathe a word about your loss;"

In Case You Missed It
Kate shared her favorite strainers. One for fruit rinsing and these for pre-rinsing grains like rice and quinoa.
Kate took a weekend trip with Millie and reminded us all why this travel toiletry bag is the best.
Kate still recommends the Toniebox. It has provided endless entertainment for Millie, and Alberta knows how to work it too.
