Power Nap #71
Fiction book sales have surged since 2020 / Top 10 Prime Day Sales
Hey friends, I know for many of you this email finds you overwhelmed, displaced, or even without clean water or power. To anyone who was affected by Helene or is in the path of Milton, we are thinking about you so much and actively praying for you. We are donating and doing what we can from afar, but if there is a specific need you have, please don't hesitate to reply to this email. So much of the Power Nap community is located in the southeast, and I have heard from a countless number of you who wish you could help in more tangible ways. Perhaps at this time sticking to financial donations is best, but if anyone has ideas for how to could actively connect readers in need with readers who want to help, I am all ears.
In Case You Missed It
This time last year Kate and Nate were in Banff celebrating their 10 year wedding anniversary. This blog post details the entire trip.
The best non-stick pans are on sale for Prime Day. They are high ticket, but are the only non-stick pans we have used that are scrape-proof, oven safe, and very durable.
If you haven't please consider donating to the NTK fundraiser for World Central Kitchen. They are getting comforting meals to those affected by Helene. Thank you SO much to everyone who has donated.
“There should be no shame in admitting to a mistake; after all, we really are only admitting that we are now wiser than we once were.”

Long Reads We Liked
1. Michael Lewis is one of the best at making boring things interesting. Some examples: high frequency trading in Flash Boys; baseball statistics in Moneyball; mortgage-backed securities in The Big Short; academic psychology in the Undoing Project. In this long article in the Washington Post (you may need to create a free account to read it), Lewis profiles Christopher Mark, an engineer who reshaped coal mine safety. “But Chris had been endowed with a deeper-than-usual desire for fairness. He had a powerful father and a powerless mother and wound up feeling powerful sympathy for the underdog. He’d ended up working for the institution best equipped to help the unlucky defend themselves from the lucky. And the effect of his work had indeed been to make the world just a little bit less unfair.”
2. For fans of the book The Three Body Problem (Nate also enjoyed Season 1 of the Netflix show which sort of sticks to the book). “'Two possibilities exist,' physicist and science-fiction author Arthur C. Clarke once wrote. ‘Either we are alone in the universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying.’”
3. The New Yorker profiles Ina Garten. One thing I didn't know: she transferred to NC State – no wonder she's so likeable! She also has a new book coming out. Btw, this article is on the New Yorker website. You will need to free account to read it. And once you have a free account, you can read six articles on the website per calendar month (feels like a lot to me).
Fiction book sales have surged since 2020. Nate is calling this good news, even if he suspects most of these gains came from Colleen Hoover and various types of steamy elf/dragon romance.
